What is Mountain Torq?
Mountain Torq is the world’s highest and Asia's first via ferrata that starts at 3,200m and ends off at 3,800m above sea level on Mt Kinabalu in Sabah. Mountain Torq enables climbers and non-climbers to experience the thrill of mountain climbing while taking in the spectacular surroundings.
What is a via ferrata?
A via ferrata (or ‘iron road’ in Italian) is a protected mountain path consisting of a series of rungs, rails and cables embracing the rock face. It allows access to scenic sections of the mountains that are typically available only to rock climbers and mountaineers. Who can climb Mountain Torq?
Climbers and non-climbers aged between 10 and 70 who are fit and healthy, not afraid of heights, and want to experience the mountain in a whole new way.
Do I need any climbing experience?
Absolutely not. If you can climb a ladder, you can climb Mountain Torq.
Is there someone to guide me?
Yes, you and your group will be assigned an activities trainer. Our friendly trainer is there to give you a full safety briefing and training on how to use the safety devices. They are also there to climb with you, provide tips on how to negotiate the more difficult obstacles, as well as highlight some of the spectacular sights along the way.
Do any of your trips include taking us up on the via ferrata at the break of dawn?
We do not bring clients up on the via ferrata before day break due to safety concerns.
Where do we meet the Mountain Torq team for the activities?
We will meet you at Pendant hut for your briefing on the day you arrive.
During your briefing session, you will be informed
of the actual meeting point and meeting times for your relevant activity.
Do you take in ‘walk in’ customers at the summit?
Yes, we also welcome ‘Walk-ins’ at either Laban Rata / or at Pendant hut. It will be on a first come first serve basis and weather permitting.
What is the ratio of activities trainer to via ferrata climbers?
Our trainer to climber ratio is
1:10 for Walk the Torq
1:6 for The Preamble & Low's Peak Citcuit
What other activities are there besides via ferrata?
You can enjoy a whole host of other outdoor activities that
Mountain Torq offers such as sports climbing, alpine rock climbing,
rappelling and basic mountain experience.

How much time should I spend on Mt Kinabalu?
You should plan to spend at least 3 days 2 nights to fully enjoy what Mt Kinabalu has to offer. Be sure not to miss out on these activities:

What do I need to bring?
Mountain Torq will provide all technical safety equipment required for its activities.
As for personal items, here's a checklist of what you will normally bring for mountain hiking:
Warm clothing
Gloves
A water bottle
Torchlight (if you are climbing Low's Peak on the Mountain Torq’s via ferrata)
Comfortable running/ hiking shoes
Raincoat
Energy snacks e.g. chocolate, nuts, glucose, sweets
Sunglass and sun lotion (beware of the strong UV rays)
A small backpack to hold your things
Towel

Where is Mountain Torq located?
Mountain Torq is located above 3200m on Mt Kinabalu’s Panar Laban rock face. To get there, it is a scenic 4 - 6 hour hike from Mt Kinabalu Park Headquarters. Once you reach the Laban Rata rock slab, which houses a group of mountain lodges including our own huts, a short 10 - 15 min walk will lead you to Mountain Torq’s starting point.

How do I get to Mt Kinabalu?
Kinabalu Park Headquarters is 2 hours (88km) by road from Kota Kinabalu. You can get there by bus, taxi or private transportation. Mountain Torq can also arrange for a private van to pick you up from Kota Kinabalu town or the airport.
How do I get to Kota Kinabalu?
There are direct flights to Kota Kinabalu (the capital of Sabah) from Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Macau and Taiwan. Additionally, you can also get on one of several daily flights to Kota Kinabalu from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital city.

What do I need to do to take part in Mountain Torq’s activities?
To take part in Mountain Torq’s activities,
we strongly advise that you make an advance booking to reserve a slot of your choice.

please choose from our list of authorized agents who will be able to
help make all the necessary arrangements for you.
Is it necessary to have a mountain guide to accompany me at all times?
Yes, based on Sabah Park's regulations,
all climbers /hikers have to be accompanied by a mountain guide
during your ascend and decent on the main hiking and summit trail.
Our Mountain Torq trainer will be with you mainly during your
Mountain Torq activities.
Can I bring my own camera?
Yes, please do bring your camera so that you will be able to capture the
amazing memories you will be bringing back with you.
But do ensure that you secure your camera with a cord to minimize
the risk of dropping it. During the activity you will need to place
it in your backpack to minimize runs the risk of dropping onto and injuring fellow climbers below.
We will advise you on scenic and ideal locations where
you will be take out your camera to shoot some shots.
How safe are the activities?
Mountain Torq ensures that safety standards are adhered to at all times.
All our trainers undergo regular skills certification and upgrading with
training standards and syllabus endorsed by the International Climbing and
Mountaineering Federation (UIAA). Regular safety checks and maintenance are
also conducted on the via ferrata equipment. This means that all you need to
do is focus on enjoying yourself.
